Wildland Fire Management

Summer Wildland Fire School

Wildland Fire Courses Summer 2010

The Summer Wildland Fire School is a training partnership between Eastern Idaho Technical College, U.S. Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management.  The mission of this program is to train local residents for employment as seasonal wildland fire fighters.  Between 60-to-85 new wildland firefighters are trained annually to respond to wildland fires in southern Idaho, western Wyoming, all of Utah, Nevada, and nationally

The cornerstone of this program is the Basic Fire School.  The purpose of this one-week course is to train Type 2 Wildland Firefighters in basic firefighting skills. The course introduces students to the fire behavior factors that will aid them in the safe and effective control of wildland fires.  In addition, a variety of National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) fire suppression, leadership, and incident command system courses are offered during the fire school.
